Are You Opting Out On Setting Goals For 2012?
Goals are Dreams with Deadlines.
Without a Deadline they remain a Dream.
I’ve heard many people say in
recent weeks – personally and in much written material - something like this:
“No, I’m not setting goals this year. I don’t believe in goals. They never work.”
It has been interesting for
me to reflect that these people obviously expect the goals to do the work of
working!
It’s not the goals that don’t
work. It’s us who set the goals that don’t "work".
Goals are great motivators.
They encompass our dreams, so why wouldn’t we want to set goals and make a
commitment to achieve them? Why do we give up so easily on our dreams? There
are lots of reasons and my motivation for this week is to use this check list
to reflect on why you don’t achieve your goals and what you can do about that
in 2012.
- Have you a compelling reason
for wanting to achieve this goal? Or is your reason motivated by someone else’s
expectations?
- Do you set realistic
deadlines for achieving your goals?
- Do you break your goals up
into small steps so you can move toward achieving them step by step? This sees
you making progress and therefore becomes motivational in itself.
- Do you write your goals down?
One of my great motivators, Management Guru, Brian Tracy, says that only 3% of
adults have written goals and plans, and they earn more than the other 97% put
together.
- Do you have a Performance or
Accountability Partner with whom you share your goals and with whom you have a
mutually accountable relationship for challenging one another to achieve them?
So I’m challenging you to
motivate yourself to take the action to say YES to all these questions.
Take action now to make your
dreams a reality in 2012.
