Did you realise that only 1 in 4 employees (26%) in Australia and New Zealand are fully engaged in their work and with their organisations? Did you also know that 1 in 5 (20%) are actually disengaged? What’s more important is that engaged employees stay for what they can give, while disengaged employees stay for what they can get. These were some of the results of Blessing White research on employee engagement in 2008. It has not got any better in the following two years. In fact, if anything, it has got worse. Gallup Organisation Research in Australia released in July 2008 supported those results when it found that 20% of Australian workers are disengaged, costing the economy $31.5 billion dollars per year. Every CEO. Manager, team leader and co-ordinator wants to have an engaged team of people who work WITH them, not just FOR them. The feature article in this newsletter gives some important insights, strategies and recommendations for how you can engage your employees to do just that. They are often challenging and confronting. Thursday, October 7 – R U O K at Work?
This is a national day of action to raise the consciousness of us all in our workplaces to the well-being of our colleagues. It’s a day set aside to remind us to check – not just today but every day - that our colleagues are OK. It costs nothing except the willingness to reach out. Just by doing that we may save a colleague from taking his/her life because of a sense of uselessness and meaninglessness. Every year in Australia almost 800,000 adults experience a depressive illness. One in four women and one in six men will suffer depression sometime in their lives. It is the leading cause of disability in Australia. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has predicted that by 2020 depression will be the second biggest health problem world-wide behind heart disease. Disengagement can be linked to depression and it’s important that all CEOs, managers, team leaders and co-ordinators are aware of this connection. R U O K is an important question for them to ask before they go into performance management with an employee who is not measuring up.
